I wanted to try the viewing with some natural material.
I got some reed – like material from Seurasaari.
I tried to, if it works.
And it worked! May be not the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, but I have experienced something new. And natural.
I decided to try something more-chair looking. Version where the structure of the chair is made out of metal, but parts, where the comfort is more needed – from reed. I made few 1:5 sale models
Scale models looked quite nice, but there was a quite big contradiction. Life spam of the metal is long, but the reed I have used are very fragile. Of course, there cound be a changanble parts, but that is not very handy.
And…my teachers mentioned that reed is not related to the structure of the chair. Instead of that there could be any other material. May be I should leave this type of reed for the beautiful roofs and use the other, Lake Reed. As in the Mediterranean Chairs….and that type of reed (Jarvikaisla – fin/ Ezera meldrs – lv) also is local material.
Ok. Seemed that I have to find out more about this material.
When I got the natural material, I was thinking – how to use it, to create conditions for sitting. Where reed is used? I remembered reed roofs in traditional architecture. Of course, my very favorite place, Open Air museum in Riga came into my mind…
I found out that for creating roofs, reed at first is bidden in smaller bunches, which are connected to the structure of the roof. I was trying to apply this principle to the seat.
This was the sketch of the principle.
And these were the first experiments with the material.
After the meeting with teachers I understood, that I am very far from any kind of chair or seat. Teachers suggested me to avoid these simple geometrical shapes I wanted to create from the reed. And the ribbon…is it natural?
Ok. Probably I have to try smth different, I thought.
